Alexander Drives in Three, as UMBC Sweeps Hartford with 11-5 Win

Box Score

West Hartford, Conn. – Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va/Woodbridge) drove in three runs, while adding three hits as well, as UMBC (12-28, 7-9 AE) completed a sweep of Hartford Sunday afternoon at the UH Softball Stadium by a score of 11-5.

Alexander went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, capping off a weekend where she went 7-for-13, five RBI, five runs scored, four stolen bases, and the game winning hits in game one and two of the series.

Hartford (9-28, 0-15 AE) took an early lead, scoring one in the bottom of the first. The Retrievers would respond two innings later, scoring two in the third inning. After Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) walked, Alexander would single and would move to third base on an error by the right fielder that would score Keffler. Two batters later, Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) would score Alexander on a bunt single to make the score 2-1.

Hartford would retake the lead the next inning, plating four runs in the fourth inning to make the score 5-2. UMBC once again would respond two innings later, this time scoring seven runs in the sixth inning. After back to back leadoff singles, and a wild pitch to advance the runners into scoring position, Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) would bring both runs in and advance to second on the throw. After a hit by pitch and a Keffler single to load the bases, Alexander tripled down the left field line to clear the bases. Daigneau would walk two batters later and steal second, before Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) would drive Daigneau and Alexander in to make the score 9-5.

UMBC would add two more runs in the seventh, securing the 11-5 win and a series sweep over Hartford. Hammett picked up the win, not giving up a hit in three and a third innings of relief.

The Retrievers are back in action on Wednesday, May 2 in the season finale, as they travel to Stony Brook for a single game. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
