Women's Lacrosse Falls to #1 Stony Brook, 22-7, in Final Road Game

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – In the final road game of the season, the UMBC women's lacrosse team fell to #1 Stony Brook, 22-7, on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves move to 15-0 on the season and 6-0 in America Play, while the Retrievers fall to 10-6 overall and 2-4 in conference contests.

 

The game started off with a back-and-forth battle for the lead. Stony Brook scored first before junior Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) scored in front of the goal off a pass from senior Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster).

 

After the Seawolves put another on the scoreboard to take a 2-1 lead, junior Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) netted a goal on a player-up opportunity off an assist from senior Kalyn Crocetti (Joppa. Md./Maryvale Preparatory). Jamison scored her first of the day off a feed from senior Caitlin Miller (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) to give UMBC a 3-2 lead at the 19:42 mark before Stony Brook tied the game up just 40 seconds later.

 

Junior Brittany Levine (Middletown, Md./Middletown) put the Retrievers back on top, 4-3, off an assist from Jamison, but the Seawolves scored two straight to take a 5-3 lead with 11:14 to go in the first half.

 

One minute later, Jamison added another goal for UMBC to tie the game up at 5-all. However, Stony Brook scored nine straight goals to take a 14-5 advantage into the half.

 

The Seawolves had a four-goal run to open the second half to take an 18-5 lead before McDonald added another score to the board for UMBC.

 

Stony Brook scored another three goals for a 21-6 lead before UMBC scored an own goal. The Seawolves scored one final goal for the 22-7 final.

 

Jamison led the Retrievers with four points off two goals and two assists, followed by McDonald with two. Miller led the team with four draw controls, bumping her up to 80 on the season; the senior now holds the record for most draw controls in a season.

 

In goal, Anna Tesoriero picked up the win after making six saves between the pipes. Jessica Goralaski also saw time in goal, making two saves. For UMBC, senior Kelsey Major (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) fell to 10-6 on the season but made eight saves during the game and scooped up three ground balls.

 

The Retrievers will return home on Saturday, April 28 when they close out the regular season against the Hartford Hawks. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor their graduating seniors.
