Softball Falls at Georgetown on Sunday Afternoon

Box Score

Washington, D.C. – The UMBC softball team (1-12) scored two in the third inning to take an early lead, before Georgetown would fight back to win the game, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Nationals Youth Academy.

It was the last day of the weekend long Georgetown Tournament.

The Hoyas (5-12) would get on the board first, knocking a run in in the bottom of the first. UMBC would get the run back and another in the third, as Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) knocked in her second RBI of the season. Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) would earn a leadoff walk, which was then followed by a Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) single to put runners on first and third. After a strikeout, Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) would lay down a sacrifice bunt to get the runners over to second and third, putting Dawson in a position to bring the runners home.

Dawson would single to shortstop, allowing Alexander to score and Daigneau to move to third. Georgetown attempted to get Daigneau out, however; that failed and allowed Dawson to advance to second and Daigneau being the second Retriever to cross home in the inning. UMBC would go on top 2-1, but a fly out the next batter would take away any more opportunities that inning.

Georgetown would get the run back with a RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, before going on to score four in the fourth inning, and another run in the fifth to top off the 7-2 victory.

Dawson and Daigneau lead the team offensively, as Dawson went 1-for-3 with a RBI and Daigneau would go 2-for-3 with a run, walk, and stolen base.

The Retrievers return to action on Friday, March 9 in a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1:00 pm and game two at 3:15 pm. The doubleheader is UMBC's first home game of the season, and is part of the MSU Invitational.
