Baltimore, Md. – Redshirt senior Erin Trnka (Goffstown, N.J./Goffstown) recorded her first career homerun over the right-center field fence, as UMBC (5-19), lost 12-3 in five innings against UMKC on Wednesday.

The two-run homer from Trnka put the Retrievers on the board in the bottom half of the third inning.  The inning began with a leadoff infield single from freshman Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), and the homerun brought in sophomore Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek), who reached base via a fielder's choice.  The homerun cut into the 5-0 UMKC lead.

The Retrievers put another run on the board in the bottom of the fourth, after sophomore Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) shut down the Kangaroos in order in the top half.  Senior Haley DeLany (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area) led off the fourth with a single up the middle, and reached third base after a fielder's choice, and a single by fellow senior Toni Santanastasso (Canonsburg, Pa./Pope John XXIII Regional).  DeLany came home after an RBI groundout by Keffler to bring UMBC within two runs.

UMKC scored seven runs in the top half of the fifth to give them a 9-run lead, and UMBC was unable to score in the bottom half, ending the game after five innings.

UMBC opens up America East play this weekend at home with a three-game set against UMass Lowell, with a double header on Friday and a single game on Saturday.
