Baltimore, Md. -- Sophomore Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) picked up her first victory of the season in the circle and also went 6-for-7 with two runs and an RBI at the plate, to help pace the UMBC Softball team in two victories on Sunday afternoon.

Hammett's walk-off RBI single in the sixth gave UMBC (5-17) a 9-1 win over Saint Peter's (2-13) in game one, and the Retriever offense then exploded for six, sixth inning runs in the second game to seal a 10-3 victory over Rider (3-15).

Game 1

The Retrievers exploded for five runs in the second inning after Hammett started the frame with a single, which was followed up by a Haley DeLany (Lederach, Pa.) single and a Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J.) walk. After a Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa.) fielder's choice got Hammett at the plate, Maddie Daigneau (New River, Az) drove in DeLany and Lesko with a two RBI single. Santonastasso and Daigneau would both then score on a throwing error to make it 4-0, and Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) would drive in the fifth run of the inning with a two-out RBI double.

The third inning was near identical to the second, as Hammett led-off with a single, and was followed by a DeLany walk and an RBI single from Lesko. After a Santonastasso RBI groundout, Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) drove in Lesko from third with a two out single to make it 8-0.

The Peacocks would extend the game with a two-out RBI single in the top of the fifth, but Hammett walked it off, with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that scored Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va.) and ended the game via run-rule.

Pierce finished the game 3-for 4, while Hammett went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and pitched all six innings, allowing five hits, an earned run, striking out one and walking none, to get the win.

Game 2

The Broncs took an early 1-0 lead in the second, but Lesko delivered a mammoth two-run blast in the third to give UMBC the lead. Rider would tie it up at two with a solo shot of their own in the fourth, but the Retrievers would quickly respond with two in the bottom half with RBI singles from DeLany and Alexander.

After another Rider homer cut the lead to 4-3 in the sixth, UMBC would explode for six runs in the bottom half of the inning to put the game out of reach. A DeLany two-run homer would make it 6-3, and after a run scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-3, Daigneau made it 8-3 with an RBI single. A Broncs error plated the ninth run and Hammett hit a sacrifice fly to deep left to make it 10-3.

Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J.), pitched the complete game for UMBC, allowing the three earned runs on five hits, walking none and striking out three.

Alexander went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three stolen bases, while DeLany and Hammett each had two-hit games.

The UMBC Softball team will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when it hosts Kent State at 3 p.m.
