Offense Comes Alive as Softball Defeats Saint Peter's, 7-3

Box Score

Baltimore, Md. – Four different Retrievers had multi-hit games, as the UMBC softball team's (3-17) offense came alive Saturday afternoon as they defeated Saint Peter's, 7-3, in Baltimore.

Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) lead the way for the Retrievers, going 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI, one of six UMBC players to knock a run in.

The Peacocks (2-11) got on the board first, scoring off a home run in the top of the second. UMBC responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa./Pope John XXIII Regional) walked in a run, followed by Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) the next at bat knocking in a run off of a fielder's choice.

Both teams wouldn't score in the next two innings, until Saint Peter's would score two unearned runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. The Retrievers would get back on the board in the bottom of the fifth, beginning with Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) getting on with a walk. After a Saint Peter's pitching change, Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) would follow up with a bunt single to but runners on first and second. Hammett would drive in Dawson and advance Alexander to third.

Alexander would score the next batter on a double steal to take the lead. After a quick out, Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio/Jackson-Milton) would double in pinch runner Shayna Rider (Westminster, Md./Delone Catholic) to make the score 5-3 heading into the sixth inning. UMBC would score another two runs in the sixth inning, after a fielding error by Saint Peter's would allow a run to score and then Alexander singling in Haley DeLany (Ledarach, Pa./Souderton Area) who pinch hit two batters before.

The game would end with the score 7-3, in favor of UMBC. Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) picked up her third win of the season, throwing a complete game. She allowed three runs, only one earned, with no walks and five strikeouts.

The Retrievers return to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 25 as they close out the UMBC Retriever Classic. They will play Saint Peter's at 1:30 pm, followed by a game against Rider that is scheduled for 3:45 pm.
