Women's Lacrosse Rolls to Third Straight Win in 16-10 Victory over Duquesne

Box Score

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The UMBC women's lacrosse team picked up its third-straight victory on Saturday, defeating the Duquesne Duke, 16-10. The Retrievers move to 6-1 on the season while the Dukes fall to 1-4.

The Dukes came out strong, scoring the first three goals of the game before senior Caitlin Miller (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) netted a free position goal. Miller then fed a pass to junior Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) for a man-up goal to cut Duquesne's lead to 3-2.

Duquesne added two more goals to the board to take a 5-2 lead, but UMBC scored four in a row from Miller off an assist from freshman Lily Kennedy (Marriotsville, Md./Marriots Ridge), senior Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster), and two from junior Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) to take a 6-5 lead into halftime.

Right out of the locker rooms, Kennedy and Miller extended UMBC's lead to 8-5. McDonald added one more before the Dukes chipped in two to make the score, 9-7, in favor of the Retrievers.

UMBC extended its lead to 15-7 after going on a six-goal run, marked by two from Jamison and Moeller, one from junior Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur), and the first career goal by freshman Kristyn Staley (Middletown, Md./Middletown); Staley also had her first assist on one of Moeller's goals during the run.

Duquesne broke up the scoring run by answering with three of their own to close the gap to 15-10. UMBC's Zoë Pekins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) scored the final goal of the game off an assist from junior Brittany Levine (Middletown, Md./Middletown) for the 16-10 final.

Moeller led the team with six points off four goals and two assists, followed by Miller (3g, 2a) and Jamison (3g, 1a). Miller and McDonald combined to control 12 of UMBC's 15 draws.  Defensively, this is the fifth game this season that the team has limited its opponent to 10 goals or less.

In goal, senior Kelsey Major (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) picked up the win, making 13 saves between the pipes. Duquesne's Emily McMinimee made nine saves in all 60 minutes of play.

The Retrievers will return home to UMBC Stadium on Wednesday, March 14 as they welcome crosstown rivals Johns Hopkins. The opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
