WORCESTER, Mass. – The UMBC swimming and diving teams took home 19 individual medals and two top-three relay finishes on the third day of competition, as two men's records fell in the process. The men's team held strong in first place with 730 points, while the women continued to build up to New Hampshire's lead, holding onto second place with 539.5 points.
Senior Philip Adejumo set a new school record in the 100 fly after touching in with a time of 47.43 to earn gold, taking down Mohamed Hussein's record of 47.79 set back in 2014. He also hit an NCAA B Cut in the process. Sophomore Garrett Wlochowski and freshman Jack Carlisle went two-three in the event.
Sophomore Luis Galvan also broke a seven-year-old America East record in the 100 breast, touching in with a time of 55.05. He breaks Boston University's Kyle Ernst's record that was set back in 2011 and also hit an NCAA B Cut in the process. Seniors Kyle Paxton and Jared Vance earned silver and bronze, respectively, in the event.
Sophomore Emily Vance earned gold in the 100 back after touching the wall with a time of 54.50, earning an NCAA B cut and breaking Lauren Day's school record of 55.07. Junior Cassandra Willie came in sixth, while sophomore Julia Horan came in seventh.
The day started out with a silver and bronze medal for UMBC, as juniors Britt Driscoll and Kelly Lajoie medaled in the women's 400 IM. Driscoll touched in with a time of 4:21.77, while Lajoie clocked in with a time of 4:23.76. Juniors Laura Massicotte and Aleasha Knight finished four-five in the event.
In the men's 400 IM, senior Nikola Trajkovic earned gold in the event after he touched the wall in a time of 3:55.20. Freshman Kai Wisner earned bronze with a time of 4:00.28. Freshman Jeremy Gates finished fourth, while senior Andrew Femiano came in fifth.
In the women's 100 fly, freshman Natalija Marin tied for first place with Binghamton's Brooke Pettis, both reaching the wall in a time of 55.37. Junior Cassandra Willie placed fifth and senior Allison Atkinson finished seventh.
In the women's 200 free, junior Hania Moro earned a bronze medal after clocking in with a time of 1:50.39. Marin finished eighth in the event.
The Retriever men went one-two-three in the 200 free, as sophomore Ilia Rattsev earned gold in a time of 1:37.14. Junior Connor Ganley took home a silver after touching in with a time of 1:40.45, while Trajkovic earned bronze with a time of 1:40.51. Freshman Jonah Pennington came in fourth and senior Haythem Abdelkhalek touched the wall in fifth place.
In the women's 100 breast, junior Maddy Popalis earned a bronze medal after touching in with a time of 1:04.14. Sophomore Haylee Committe touched the wall in fifth place.
Junior Alexander Gliese took home gold in the men's 100 back touching in with a time of 48.55, just .02 seconds shy of breaking Mohamed Hussein's America East record. Wlochowski earned silver after clocking in with a time of 49.35. Adejumo earned a fourth-place finish in the event.
The night ended with a silver medal for the team of Emily Vance, Popalis, Marin, and Committe in the women's 400 relay. The group finished in a time of 3:44.25.
The men earned gold in the same event after the team of Gliese, Galvan, Adejumo, and Rattsev clocked in with a time of 3:16.95.
The final day of competition will begin at WPI with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 5:30 p.m.
