UMBC Drops 45-42 Heartbreaker to Hofstra on Sunday Afternoon

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball took a lead into the fourth quarter, but the Pride used an 18-8 fourth quarter to pull away from UMBC 45-42 on Sunday. Junior Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) led the way with a season best 16 points.

The Retrievers fall to 6-5, while the Pride improve to 4-6 on the year.

UMBC got out to an early lead thanks to a Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va.) corner three to make it 6-5. Both teams struggled from the floor late in the quarter, with both sides shooting under 25 percent in the first. Oliver made it a two point deficit after one, taking a missed layup coast-to-coast as UMBC trailed 10-8.

Hofstra raced out to a five point lead in the early going of the second. Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) hit a three on the wing to cut the deficit to just two. From there the Retrievers would go 3:41 without a point, allowing the Pride to get out to a 17-11 lead. However, the Retrievers would use a 7-0 run late to tie up just before the break, 22-22, on an Oliver floater.

Oliver led the charge in the first half with nine points on 4-6 shooting. Moore and Skrocka each chipped in three a piece.

UMBC came out of the locker room on a 4-0 spurt to retake the lead, 26-22. The Retrievers held the Pride to 1-7 from the field over the final part of the quarter, getting four big points from Oliver to take a 34-27 lead into the fourth.

Hofstra found their footing in the fourth, going on a 9-2 run to open the quarter to tie it. Oliver responded with a three on the wing to retake the lead before the Pride hit a three to retake the lead for the first time in the second half. The Pride then ripped off a 9-0 run to take a six point lead before Moore drilled a stepback three to cut it in half.

The Retrievers had a chance at the buzzer to tie, but the three from Skrocka went in and out as Hofstra held on for a 45-42 win on Sunday afternoon.

Oliver ended the game tying a season high with 16 points on 7-12 shooting, adding five rebounds. Summers chipped in 10 points to reach double figures for the ninth time in 11 games.

UMBC will have off during finals week and return to the court on Thursday, Dec. 20 when they travel to Morgan State. Tip-off with the Bears is set for 5:30 p.m.
