Late Rally Comes Up Short, as Women's Basketball Falls 65-52 to Mount St. Mary's

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball dropped their fourth straight, 65-52 to the Mountaineers on Thursday night. UMBC rallied late in the fourth, but the comeback fell just short. Junior Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) led the way with 12 points.

UMBC falls to 6-4 on the year while the Mountaineers improve to 5-3.

Mount St. Mary's opened the game on a 6-0 run, forcing an early Retriever timeout as the Retrievers started 0-5 from the field. That lead stretched to 9-0 before Eryn Fisher (Kingsley, Australia) hit a layup to end the run. However, the Mountaineers continued their hot shooting, shooting 56.3% from the floor in the quarter, leading 24-11 after one.

The Mount started the second the same as the first, using another 6-0 spurt to extend the lead. UMBC would go scoreless over the last 5:20 of the half, trailing 44-20 at the break.

The Retrievers would find their groove in the third quarter, opening the period on an 8-0 run. Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) had five of the eight points, capping the run with a three off a feed from Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist). However, the Mountaineers responded, going on a 6-0 run to quell the Retriever comeback.

UMBC would rally late, using a 13-3 run during the latter half of the fourth to cut the deficit to just 13, after Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va.) hit a tough and one. However, itt would not be enough, as Mount St. Mary's held on for a 65-52 victory on Thursday night.

Skrocka led the Retrievers with 12 points, going 4-7 from three. Summers recorded her eighth double digit game, finishing with 10 points.

UMBC will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 9 when they take on Hofstra at the UMBC Event Center. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
