Skrocka Nets Career High 18 Points; UMBC Falls to No. 7 Maryland, 92-61 on Sunday

College Park, Md.-- UMBC women's basketball got a career high 18 points from junior Dominika Skrocka (Moscow, Russia), but could not overcome No. 7 Maryland in a 92-61 loss on Sunday. The Retrievers fall to 6-3 on the year, while the Terps improve to 8-0.

The Terps started the game on an 8-0 run to take an early lead. Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va.) ended the run with three to get UMBC on the board. Maryland would use another 7-0 spurt to extend their lead before Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy) nailed a corner jumper. The Retrievers would heat up late getting triples from O'lesheya Braxton (Paterson, N.J.), Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) and Dominika Skrocka to cut the deficit to 11. However, the Terrapins hits three just before the buzzer to take a 29-14 lead after one.

Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) opened the second quarter with two quick buckets to get the Maryland lead back to just 11. From there the Terps would use a 17-0 run to extended their lead midway through the quarter. Skrocka would heat up toward the end of the period, hitting a pair of three's with Maryland taking a 58-30 lead into the break.

Skrocka led the Retrievers in the first half with nine points, with Rubio chipping in four. The Retrievers shot 41 percent from the floor and 40 percent from three.

The Retrievers came out of the locker room on fire, hitting their first four shots of the third quarter. Summers and Eryn Fisher (Kingsley, Australia) hit back-to-back three's as part of the spurt that forced Maryland to call an early timeout. However, the Terps responded, going on a 13-3 run to their biggest lead of the game to that point at 30, leading 81-48 after three.

UMBC would outscore the Terps 18-16 in the fourth quarter, but Maryland prevailed 92-61 on Sunday afternoon.

Skrocka led the way with 18 points, going 6-7 from three in the loss. Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) chipped in nine points with Moore adding eight.

The Retrievers are back in action this Thursday against Mount St. Mary's. The Mountaineers and Retrievers tip-off at 7 p.m. from the UMBC Event Center on ESPN+.
