Box Score Burlington, Vt.-- UMBC men's soccer needed penalty kicks, but they advance to the semifinals of the America East Tournament, 1-1 (5-4 PK) over Vermont on Saturday. The Retrievers advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2015.

Vermont had the first good chance in the ninth minute, but the shot was stopped by Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) and sets aside.

Matt Bailey (Stevensville, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) with a good chance in the 15th minute, but his shot is stymied by UVM keeper Clay Thomas.

The Catamounts mounted some pressure in the middle portion of the half, but the Retriever defense stood tall, keeping the match scoreless.

Both teams had good chances in the first 45 minutes, but UMBC and Vermont went into halftime scoreless.

Vermont got on the board first in the 50th minute, with Jonathan Bryant heading home the corner kick from Geo Alves.

Bailey tied it with 28 minutes to go in regulation. Bailey took a through ball from Jordan Dove (Gambrills, Md./DeMatha) and got enough on it to go through the hands of Thomas to tie it at 1-1.

With under eight to go in regulation, Jones was called upon once more to make a game saving stop. He punched the attempt over the cage to keep it at 1-1 late.

The Catamounts had all the chances in the two overtime periods, but the Retriever defense came up big as penalty kicks were needed to decide a winner.

In the penalty shootout, the Retrievers went first, and missed on their opening attempt. Both teams converted each of their kicks after that heading into the final round.

UVM had a chance to win it with the last kick, but Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) made the stop to force extra kicks.

After a UMBC miss was followed up by an O'Loughlin save, Jackson Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) converted to put UMBC in front.

The Catamounts would miss their next kick, giving UMBC the win 5-4 in the shootout.
