UMBC Advances to #AEMSOC Tournament Semis with Thrilling Win Against Vermont in Penalty Kicks

Burlington, Vt.-- UMBC men's soccer needed penalty kicks, but they advance to the semifinals of the America East Tournament, 1-1 (5-4 PK) over Vermont on Saturday. The Retrievers advances to the semifinals for the first time since 2015.

How We Got Here:

  • Vermont had the first good chance in the ninth minute, but the shot was stopped by Quantrell Jones (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) and sets aside.

  • Matt Bailey (Stevensville, Md./Saints Peter and Paul)  with a good chance in the 15th minute, but his shot is stymied by UVM keeper Clay Thomas.

  • The Catamounts mounted some pressure in the middle portion of the half, but the Retriever defense stood tall, keeping the match scoreless.

  • Both teams had good chances in the first 45 minutes, but UMBC and Vermont went into halftime scoreless.

  • Vermont got on the board first in the 50th minute, with Jonathan Bryant heading home the corner kick from Geo Alves.

  • Bailey tied it with 28 minutes to go in regulation. Bailey took a through ball from Jordan Dove (Gambrills, Md./DeMatha) and got enough on it to go through the hands of Thomas to tie it at 1-1.

  • With under eight to go in regulation, Jones was called upon once more to make a game saving stop. He punched the attempt over the cage to keep it at 1-1 late.

  • 90 minutes was not enough, as UMBC and Vermont needed extra time.

  • The Catamounts had all the chances in the two overtime periods, but the Retriever defense came up big as penalty kicks were needed to decide a winner.

  • In the penalty shootout, the Retrievers went first, and missed on their opening attempt. Both teams converted each of their kicks after that heading into the final round.

  • UVM had a chance to win it with the last kick, but Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) made the stop to force extra kicks.

  • After a UMBC miss was followed up by an O'Loughlin save, Jackson Becher (Hummelstown, Pa.) converted to put UMBC in front.

  • The Catamounts would miss their next kick, giving UMBC the win 5-4 in the shootout.

By the Numbers:

  • Vermont outshot the Retrievers 22-13 in the match, including 10-5 in the opening half.

  • The Catamounts had 12 corner kicks to the Retrievers two.

In Net:

  • Jones made four stops in the match, giving up just the one goal.

  • O'Loughlin came on for the penalty shootout, stopping three attempts and scoring on his attempt.

  • Clay Thomas started the game, making six saves, with Aron. Runarsson playing in the overtime and PK round.

Up Next:

  • UMBC will continue on in the America East Tournament, taking on #1 Stony Brook in the semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Long Island and AE.TV.
