Stern Wins His 200th Game at UMBC; Retrievers Defeat Notre Dame (Md.) 81-43

Baltimore, Md.-- Head coach Phil Stern recorded his 200th win at UMBC in an 81-43 win against Notre Dame of Maryland on Friday night. Janee'a Summers (Bound Brook, N.J.) led the way with 17 points and six rebounds.

UMBC improves to 6-0 while the Gators fall to 0-2 on the year.

The Retrievers got out to a fast start, scoring off the opening tip with Paula Rubio (Madrid, Spain) hitting a layup. UMBC would jump out to a 10-5 lead, but the Gators but the deficit to just two. UMBC would hold the Gators without a point over the last 5:16 of the quarter, going on an 8-0 run to take an 18-7 lead after one.

UMBC continued to put pressure on the Gators, as Te'yJah Oliver (Clinton, Md./Riverdale Baptist) made a couple of beautiful fast break passes to Eryn Fisher (Kingsley, Australia) and Kayla Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) to extend the lead to 16. NDMU would rally back, cutting into the deficit, but the Retrievers would lead 32-20 at the break.

Janee'a Summers led the way with 10 points and four rebounds, as nine different Retrievers scored in the half. The Retrievers shot 41 percent from the floor, holding the Gators to 29 percent shooting.

The Retrievers came out of the break on fire, holding the Gators to just 10 points, increasing their lead 54-30 after three. UMBC shot 56 percent from the floor in the quarter to distance themselves. The defense continued their strong play in the fourth, outscoring the Gators 27-13 in the final stanza to win 81-43.

Summers ended with 17 points and six rebounds, as 11 Retrievers scored in the contest. Dominikia Skrocka (Moscow, Russia) chipped in 12 points on 4-9 shooting from three. UMBC shot 47 percent from the floor, holding the Gators to just 31 percent shooting.

Jaya Green led the Gators with 13 points in the loss.

UMBC returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 20 when they welcome Towson to the UMBC Event Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
