Elrod's Career Match Propels Volleyball to Win at Binghamton

Box Score

Vestal, N.Y. -- Sophomore Becca Elrod (Cary, Ill.) had the finest match of her career, finishing with 10 kills on .692 hitting with eight blocks as the UMBC rallied for a four-set win (22-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-20) over Binghamton in an America East match-up on Friday night.

Elrod made her first appearance of the season last Friday in the five-set victory over Hartford. Coach Cristina Robertson inserted the sophomore in the third set while the Retrievers were down 2-0, and UMBC rebounded to win the next three sets and the match..

The sophomore was a force in this match, however, helping the Retrievers to their second win in the last three matches-- all on the road.

"I am proud of the way we competed tonight against a talented Binghamton team," said UMBC head coach Cristina Robertson. "We were able to play together as a team and execute our game plan. The work we have been putting in as a team is starting to show, and we are continuing to get better every day."

Sophomore Carmen Freeman (Memphis, Tenn.) finished with a double-double, registering  a match-best 13 kills and 16 digs while adding four blocks on defense. Franchesca Reed (Aurora, Colo) combined with Elrod to form a dominant duo in the middle, as the junior added 10 kills on .529 hitting with three blocks.

Freshman Paige Krenik (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) also helped with 10 kills and 11 digs, her fourth double-double in her last five matches, while Paola Rojas (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) added eight more as UMBC finished with 56 kills overall in the match.

Krytsia Negrón (San Juan, Puerto Rico), a senior, came off the bench in the second set and finished with 35 assists to give the Retrievers a boost on offense several times.

Senior libero Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md.) had 13 digs and four assists for UMBC (6-15, 2-5).

Gaby Alicea led Binghamton (4-16,  2-5) with 13 kills in the loss.

UMBC gets back in action versus UAlbany next Friday at home in a 7 p.m. match.
