Sims Nets Season-Highs, But Women's Basketball Falls to Vermont, 72-58

BALTIMORE – UMBC senior forward Lakiah Sims (Riverdale, Ga.) posted season highs with team bests of 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists, but visiting Vermont rode a red-hot third quarter to post a 72-58 victory over the Retrievers.

Senior guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y.) added 16 points and sophomore guard Te'yjah Oliver (Clinton, Md.) added 14 to lead the hosts.

Vermont sophomore forward Hanna Crymble earned game-high honors with 19 points.  

The Catamounts his 11-of-17 shots from the floor and 6-of-10 from behind the arc in the third quarter, outscoring UMBC, 28-11, in the frame to take control. They scored the first 7 points of the stanza and extended the overall run to 17-6 to take a 46-34 lead at the 4:35 mark. UMBC responded with five straight points to trim the lead to 46-39, but Vermont buried three consecutive treys and a field goal to take a 57-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

UMBC (1-14, 0-2 America East) posted a game-high 19 points in the fourth, but could not trim the deficit to under a dozen points. 

Sims came within a point of tying her career best and hit her first two treys (2-of-2) of the season.

Vermont (5-10, 2-0 America East) finished at 51.0 percent (26-of-51) for the game and buried 10-of-25 shots (40.0 percent) from behind the arc. The Retrievers finished at 36.8 percent from the field (21-of-57) and misfired on 15 of 20 3-point attempts.

The first half was tightly-contested from the start, featuring five ties and four lead changes. Vermont scored the final five points of each quarter to take leads of 18-13 after 10 minutes and 29-28 at the break.

Castaldo scored 10 of her 16 points in the first 20 minutes, while Vermont's Kristina White hit both of her 3-point attempts and led the visitors with 8 first-half points. She would finish with a career high of 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc.

The Retrievers continue their three-game homestand on Wednesday, when they welcome Maine to the RAC Arena. The special Midday Madness start time is set for 11:00 a.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
