Men's Basketball's Winning Streak Halted at Three by Host Albany

ALBANY - Host Albany clicked on all cylinders and defeated UMBC, 83-39, at SEFCU Arena on Sunday.

 

The setback ended UMBC's three-game winning streak as the Retrievers fell to 13-8 overall and 4-2 in America East play. Albany improved to 16-6, 4-3.

 

Graduate student guard Jairus Lyles (Silver Spring, Md./De Matha) scored 12 of his team-high 14 points in the second half.  

 

UMBC went without scoring for 8:46 as Albany built a 20-4 lead by the 7:05 mark of the first half. The Retrievers converted only 5-of-28 shots from the floor and missed all nine attempts from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. The Great Danes took a 36-12 lead into the break.

 

The Danes started the second half on a 13-0 run to put the game out of reach. Albany shot nearly 58 percent from the floor (33-of-57) and buried 9-of-17 from behind the arc

 

UMBC converted 46.2 percent in the second half, but the first half struggles resulted in 17-of-54 shooting (31.5 percent) for 40 minutes. The Retrievers converted a season-low two 3-point field goals.

 

Albany graduate student forward Travis Charles scored a game-high 21 points.

 

UMBC returns home for a pair of games next week, as the Retrievers host Binghamton on Wednesday, Jan. 24 (7:00 p.m.) and then welcome Maine on Saturday, Jan. 27 (1:00 p.m,)
