Golden Goal in 98th Minute Lifts Robert Morris over UMBC, 2-1

Box Score

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A shot from 40-yards outside of the box was all it took in the 98th minute of play as the Robert Morris Colonials defeated UMBC women's soccer, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Colonials pick up their first win of the year and move to 1-3-0, while the Retrievers fall to 1-2-1 on the season.

While UMBC put a few balls around the goal in the first half, it was Robert Morris who struck first in the game, when Jane Schleicher sent a ball into the lower right corner of the net from 18 yards out in the 38th minute to give the Colonials the 1-0 lead.

After halftime, the Retrievers took two corners within the first two minutes of the second period but were unable to get anything to connect near the net. Sophomore Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) sent a header towards the net in the 63rd minute for UMBC's best look, but RMU's Sydney Bruckner was there to get the save.

Then in the 68th minute, freshman Christina Corbi (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) sent a laser shot from 30 yards out into the lower left corner for her first career goal and tied the game up, 1-1.

UMBC looked to take the lead in the 85th minute when they sent a free kick back towards the net, but a defender was there to head it away and the game ultimately went into overtime.

Junior Leah Roth (Valencia, Pa./Pine-Richland) came up with a big save early in extra time to help keep UMBC alive, while senior Madison Koenig (Crofton, Md./South River) sent a shot into the box in the 97th minute to try and give the Retrievers the win, but Bruckner made the stop.

However, Robert Morris would pick up the victory when Kristina Kelley shot a ball 40 yards towards the goal that was punched off the cross bar and into the net in the 98th minute.

Overall, UMBC outshot Robert Morris, 15-10 and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Saad led the team with four shots, including three on goal, followed by Corbi with three. In goal, Roth made three saves in 98 minutes played, while Bruckner made five stops for the Colonials.

UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will return home to Retriever Soccer Park on Thursday, Aug. 31 as they face crosstown rivals Loyola (Md.) in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
