Emmitsburg, MD – Junior Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) had six RBI on the day, including hitting a third inning grand slam in game two as the UMBC Retrievers (20-28, 3-10 America East) took that second game, 5-3, against host Mount Saint Mary's (20-29, 5-9 NEC) on Wednesday afternoon.
In the game two victory, senior Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) pitched a complete game and hit a critical sixth inning homer.
Game Two:
The Mountaineers scored a single run in the bottom of the second, but the Retrievers responded furiously with three straight hits to start the third, with a double by Haley DeLany (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area), and two singles by junior classmate Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) and freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek). Lesko then drove the ball over the right field fence for a grand slam.
Lane hit a solo shot to left field in the top of the sixth for the Retrievers' fifth run.
The Mount would respond with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Lane added to her homerun with a complete game victory, allowing two runs on eight hits. This was her second win of the season.
Senior Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) also added in two hits to the Retrievers' total.
Game One:
The Retrievers got off to an early two run lead, thanks to a Lesko single that drove in Alexander and Daigneau who started the contest with back-to-back hits.
The Mount would put five runs across before UMBC would get another run off a wild pitch, as Daigneau scored her second run to cut the score to 5-3 in favor of the Mount. Things would get away as the Mountaineers put across 12 unanswered runs, including 11 with two outs in the fourth, to take the game, 17-3, in five innings.
Daigneau lead the team at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs.
The Retrievers are back in action for their final series of the year, hosting Hartford this weekend for three games, with a double-header on Friday and a lone game on Saturday.
