Nolan Scores 100th Career Goal; Women's Lacrosse Upends UC Davis, 20-7

Box Score

BALTIMORE – Senior Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) notched her 100th career goal as the UMBC women's lacrosse team handed UC Davis a 20-7 loss on Tuesday afternoon. The Retrievers finish their non-conference schedule at 7-3, while the Aggies fall to 4-6 on the season.

Nolan became just the 17th player in the program's history to reach the 100-goal plateau, while also taking over the tenth spot in points scored in a career with 157 (100g, 57a).

UMBC opened the game with a score in just 39 seconds as sophomore Lauren McDonald (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) took a feed from classmate Sara Moeller (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls). After junior Caitlin Miller (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) put the Retrievers up 2-0 with 28:44 on the clock, UC Davis scored three straight to take the lead. Nolan was able to feed a pass to sophomore Payton Van Kirk (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) to even things up at three-all.

Another Aggies goal extended their lead to just one, but Nolan would tie things up with her golden goal and help kick start a 10-2 run to end the first half. Within the span, McDonald scored four of her six goals, including a buzzer-beating shot at the end of the half, and Moeller netted three, including converting on a man down opportunity.

The Retrievers would go into the intermission with a 13-6 lead and carried their momentum from the first half into the second, as Moeller scored within 25 seconds of the clock starting. Sophomore Catherine Sims (Elkridge, Md./Howard) notched her first goal of the season to give UMBC the 15-6 lead before UC Davis scored for the first time since the 5:21 mark of the first half.

From there, it was all Retrievers, as the team closed out the game on a five-goal run, with freshman Zoë Pekins (Columbia, Md./Hammond) scoring twice.

This is the eighth time this season the Retrievers have produced double-digits, the second most under head coach Amy Slade; last season, the team had 10 games with 10 or more goals. In those eight games, UMBC is outscoring its opponents, 132-70.

Moeller led the team with nine points off five goals and four assists, while McDonald had seven points (6g, 1a). In addition to scoring her 100th goal, Nolan set a new career-high in assists, dishing out five helpers. Van Kirk notched a hat trick, while junior Carolyn Jamison (Westminster, Md./Westminster) also added a goal and two assists to the stat line. Miller picked up four draw controls, while senior Caroline Haggerty (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll School) caused a team-high three turnovers.

Between the pipes, senior Ashley Peacock (Crofton, Md./Elizabeth Seton/Louisville) picked up her fifth win of the season after making 10 saves in all 60 minutes of play. UC Davis's Lauren Ali picked up the loss, making eight saves in 42:39 of play, while Grace Richards made three saves.

UP NEXT: UMBC will remain at UMBC Stadium for its America East home opener as they welcome in UMass Lowell (5-2, 0-0 America East) on Saturday, April 1. The opening draw is set for 12 p.m. This game will be part of a doubleheader, as the men's lacrosse team hosts UMass Lowell at 3 p.m.
