Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – The UMBC women's soccer team picked up its first America East win of the season on Thursday night after they defeated the Vermont Catamounts, 1-0. The Retrievers move to 3-10-3 overall and 1-6-0 in conference contests, while the Catamounts fell to 6-8-2 overall and 2-4-1 in America East play.
The Catamounts outshot the Retrievers, 16-10, but UMBC was able to score the lone goal of the game in the 33rd minute after sophomore Jessica Hopkins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) scored her first of the season. The midfielder rebounded a ball that had been sent back into the field of play off an initial saved shot that classmate Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) had sent towards the net.
The second half saw Vermont take a quick shot at the net as Aly Spencer launched a ball towards the goal just 55 seconds into the half, but junior Leah Roth (Valencia, Pa./Pine-Richland) made the save the preserve the Retrievers' lead. In the second half, Vermont outshot UMBC, 8-2.
On the day, Saad led the Retrievers with three shots and collected her eighth career assist, which is just one shy of tying for ninth overall in program history. Vermont's Spencer and Christina Barry led all players with five shots each.
In goal, Roth made six saves in her third shutout of the year. The junior now has 71 saves on the season and 170 saves in her career, giving her sole possession of eighth overall in UMBC history. For Vermont, Coco Speckmaier made two saves in the 90 minutes played.
UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will close out the regular season on Sunday, October 22 when they host the New Hampshire Wildcats. Prior to the game, the team will honor its two graduating seniors, Gabby Boehmer and Madison Koenig.
