Harris Scores First Collegiate Goal; UMBC and Delaware Battle to 1-1 Draw on Tuesday

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.— UMBC men's soccer came from behind to force a 1-1 draw against visiting Delaware on Tuesday night. Junior David Harris (Waimanalo, Hawaii/Reservoir (Md.)) netted his first collegiate goal to force the tie and move UMBC to 7-3-4.

The Retrievers had the first good chance of the match, as Sammy Kahsai (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) blasted a shot just wide of the net in the 17th minute. The Blue Hens answered back just a minute later, as they had a shot from point-blank range ring off the post.

Kahsai once again found himself with the ball at his feet, putting a shot just wide in the 30th minute off a long throw in.

The Blue Hens cracked through just before the half, as Chad Poarch put home a shot past Ciaran O'Loughlin (Birkenhead, England) off a feed from Noa Benninga.

UMBC out-shot Delaware in the first half, 9-5, but Blue Hen keeper Todd Morton stopped all three shots that came on goal.

The Retrievers came out of the break peppering Morton, finally breaking through in the 64th minute.

Kahsai took a pass from James Gielen (Edgewater, Md./DeMatha) and slotted it to Harris who calmly put the shot home to tie the match at 1-1. The goal was the first of Harris' career.

Each team had chances late in the half, with the best coming from Delaware late. John Schroeder put a bending ball just over the cross bar, as the match headed to extra time.

UMBC had the best chances in the overtime periods, as Gregg Hauck (Linthicum, Md./North County) had a pair of chances back-to-back that were saved. Jordan Dove (Gambrills, Md./DeMatha) found himself on the end of a cross, but his header was saved on the doorstep as the match ended in a tie.

The Retrievers out-shot the Blue Hens 22-12, as UMBC garnered nine corner kicks in the match. O'Loughlin made three saves on the night, as Hauck led the team with six shots.

UMBC returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 21 when they travel to Vermont. Kickoff with the Catamounts is set for 7 p.m.
