Women's Soccer Falls to Stony Brook in Final Road Game

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMBC women's soccer team fell, 6-1, to the Stony Brook Seawolves in the final road contest of the season. The Seawolves move to 8-8-0 overall and 4-2-0 in America East play, while the Retrievers fall to 2-10-3 overall and 0-6-0 in conference contests.

 

Sophomore Jessica Hopkins (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) sent the first shot of the game towards the net, but Stony Brook's Sofia Manner was able to make the save.

 

The Seawolves took back-to-back shots in the 10th minute that junior Leah Roth (Valencia, Pa./Pine-Richland) was able to save. But, the Seawolves scored first in the 11th minute after Chase Rome sent a pass down the sideline to Fanny Gotesson. Gotesson was able to send the ball into the box to Alyssa Francese, who chipped it into the net for the first score of the game.

 

Freshman Erin Stevenson (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) looked to send the equalizer into the net for UMBC, but Manner got a hand on it to make another save in the 20th minute.

 

Stony Brook added another goal in the 37th minute after Jordyn Klapper sent a shot toward the net, but it bounced off the crossbar and at the feet of Manuela Corcho, who one-tapped it into the net to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

 

In the second half, the Seawolves scored twice within 28 seconds in the 51st minute to put them up 4-0. At 50:22, the Seawolves scored with a goal from Sam Goodwin off a pass from Kaitlin Loughren, followed by the second goal on the day from Francese at 50:50.

 

Stony Brook would add one more goal for a 5-0 lead before UMBC added a score to the board after senior Gabby Boehmer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) notched her third goal of the season in the 75th minute. Boehmer scored after she tapped in a ball that was crossed into the box after a free kick from Stevenson.

 

The Seawolves scored one final time in the game in the 77th minute for the 6-1 score.

 

Overall, the Seawolves outshot the Retrievers, 21-8, with a 12-5 advantage on goal. Francese led all players with three shots, while Stevenson had two.

 

Manner played 60 minutes, making three saves while Cara Gallagher and Shannon Robinson played the remaining 30 minutes, combining for one save. Roth stayed in goal for 69 minutes, making four saves while freshman Jade Wilkins (Stoney Beach, Md./The Catholic High School) saw 21 minutes of relief and made two stops.

 

UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will return home to Retriever Soccer Park for the final two games of the season, starting with a Thursday night matchup against Vermont. The match is slated to kickoff at 7 p.m.
