Swimming and Diving Opens Home Schedule against Navy on Friday

BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC swimming and diving opens its home schedule with a Pink Meet against Navy on Kickoff Weekend at the UMBC Aquatics Complex on Friday, October 13. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Last Time Out:

The Retrievers opened the season with a win over Seton Hall, earning several top finishes on both sides.

 

The ladies took a come from behind victory over the Pirates, winning 156-144 after winning the last few events of the meet.

 

In the 200 IM, junior Laura Massicotte (Quebec City, Quebec) finished first with a time of 2:10.64 while classmate Alesha Knight (Ottawa, Ontario) finished fourth with a time of 2:11.68.

 

In the 400 free relay, the team of Hania Moro, Britt Driscoll, Allison Atkinson, and Natalija Marin came in first place after winning the race in a time of 3:34.63. Fellow Retrievers Maddy Popalis, Emily Vance, Cassandra Willie, and Megan Allison finished second with a time of 3:37.01 and helped UMBC complete the comeback.

 

Individually, Moro won three events as she took home top finishes in the in the 200 free (1:54.71), 500 free (5:07.01), and 1,000 free (10:29.49). Popalis took first in the 200 breast with a time 2:25.52 and the 100 breast, touching in with a time of 1:06.34.

 

Marin also had two wins, picking up first in the 200 fly (2:03.91) and the 100 fly (57.25). Vance finished first in the 100 back, touching in with a time of 58.42.

 

 The men won, 167-128, as sophomore Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) won three individual events in the 200 free (1:40.44), 100 free (45.82), and 50 free (21.15). Junior Alexander Gliese (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) also had top finishes in the 100 back (50.84) and 200 back (1:50.25), while senior Philip Adejumo (Elkridge, Md./Howard) picked up

 

The relay team of Gliese, Adejumo, Luis Galvan, and Jared Vance started the meet with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:34.56.

 

Sweeping the Floor

For the first time since the 2012-13 season, the UMBC swimming and diving teams have swept all four America East Performer of the Week awards, the conference office announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Moro and Rattsev took home the swimming awards, while sophomore Abby Biddulph (Egg Harbor City, N.J.) and junior Elijah Wright (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) earned the diving honors.

Moro earned Female Swimmer of the Week, while Biddulph took home Female Diver of the Week after placing second in both the 1 and 3 meter dives. She scored a 212.18 in the 1 meter and 194.63 in the 3 meter.

After rejoining the America East since leaving for the CCSA in the 2013 season, Rattsev and Wright take home Male Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors, respectively.

Wright took first place in both diving disciplines. He scored 240.75 in the 1 meter dive and 234.98 in the 3 meter.
