Women's Soccer Falls in Sunday Contest at Longwood, 1-0

FARMVILLE, Va. – The UMBC women's soccer team closed out a four-game road stretch with a 1-0 loss to Longwood on Sunday, Sept. 11. The Lancers move to 2-5-0 on the season, while the Retrievers fall to 2-5-0.

Longwood was able to get on the board first in the 59th minute, when Janese Quick collected a pass from Gina D'Orazio in front of the box and shot it into the right corner of the net.

Junior Gabby Boehmer gave UMBC the best chance for a score late in the second period off a header shot but Longwood's Maria Kirby was there to save it.

The Retrievers also had two close chances to score in the first half, first on a throw in and a dangerous loose ball in the 36th minute that was covered up by Longwood. In the 41st minute, freshman Jessica Hopkins took a ball deep into the Lancers' territory but Kirby was there to knock it away from the net.

Overall, Longwood out-shot UMBC, 11-7; in the first half, the Lancers out-shot the Retrievers, 6-2, with a 3-1 advantage on goal. Kirby finished the day with two saves and the shutout, while UMBC's Leah Roth had four saves and the one goal against.

NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will return home to host Delaware State on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at Retriever Soccer Park.
