UMBC Opens Season with 3-2 Double Overtime Win over American

Box Score

Video Highlights

BALTIMORE, Md. – Freshmen Jamie Shiflett (Baltimore, Md. /Sparrows Point) and Nikki Saad (Hummelstown, Pa. /Lower Dauphin) kicked off their careers at UMBC with fireworks, helping the Dawgs to a 3-2 double overtime win over American on Friday night at Retriever Soccer Park.

In the 109th minute of the game, Shiflett was able to collect a pass from senior Preslie Quaranta (Baltimore, Md. /Perry Hall) on the outside corner of the box. From there, Shiflett knocked the ball toward the middle of the space and Saad took the liberty to calmly launch the ball toward the far post for the winning goal.

The night started out with a scoreless 45 minutes, but UMBC was first to get on the board as redshirt-senior Alexa Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) stole the ball from American close to midfield and shredded the defense. From 20-yards outside of the box, Quaranta curled the ball into the net in the 56th minute.

American would then take a 2-1 lead after Alexandra Taylor tapped in the ball after a mishandling in front of the goal in the 59th minute and Charly Slavick's kick took a stramge bounce in the 79th minute past the goalkeeper.

Alexa Quaranta would help send the game into overtime after junior Angela Kuhn (Bel Air, Md. /C. Milton Wright/Harford CC) crossed the ball into the box and Alexa was able to knee it into the net in the 88th minute.

In her first appearance in goal for the Retrievers, Leah Roth (Valencia, Pa./Pine-Richland) made seven saves after facing nine shots. Colleen Vivaldi and Morgan Lang combined for two saves on the night.

UMBC finished the night with 16 shots and five corner kicks, while American took seven shots and seven corners.

UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will travel up to city neighbors Loyola (Md.) on Sunday, Aug. 21 for a 4 p.m. matchup.
