Sganga's Late Double Lifts Softball to DH Split at Maine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Video Highlights

Orono, Maine -- Senior catcher Jordan Sganga (Edgewater, Md./South River) knocked a two-out tie-breaking RBI double down the right field line to score Danielle O'Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern) and give UMBC (24-29, 5-11) a 2-1 win in game two of a doubleheader at Maine. In game one, the Retrievers managed just one baserunner, via walk, and struck out 12 times as they were no-hit in a 6-0 loss.

Game 1

The game was scoreless until the third when Retriever starter Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) allowed a leadoff walk, but retired the next two batters. Maine (25-18, 12-5), however, would get four consecutive hits, including two doubles and a triple, to score four runs and go up 4-0. In the fourth, Bridget O'Malley (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) worked a two-out walk, but was stranded as she was the only Retriever to reach base in the game. The Black Bears would tack on a two more in the fourth and would go on to win 6-0.

Puccio pitched six innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits, walked three and struck out two to fall to 7-5 on the year. Molly Flowers improved to 10-10 in pitching the complete-game no-hitter for the Black Bears; she struck out 12 and walked none.

Game 2

Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Camden Regional) led-off the top of the third with a single, UMBC's first hit in ten innings, and would move over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shayna Rider (Westminster, Md./Delone Catholic). O'Malley then singled right to put runners on the corners, and Buckley then stole home to put the Retrievers up 1-0. The Black Bears, however, tied the game at one on a leadoff homer in the bottom of the fourth. The game remained tied until the sixth when O'Neill ripped a two-out single to right-center and then scored on Sganga's double.

Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) kept Maine off the board for the final two innings to earn the win and improve to 13-12 on the year. The junior lefty went all seven innings, allowing the one earned run on seven hits.

The Retrievers return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Binghamton for the America East Tournament. In the double elimination tournament, UMBC will be the fifth seed and will face fourth-seeded Stony Brook at 11:30 a.m. The loser will face the loser of No.3 Albany vs No.6 Hartford in a 4 p.m. elimination game, while the winner moves on to face first seeded Binghamton at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
