Vestal, N.Y. –  The UMBC Softball team fought valiantly, but could not hold-off two-time defending America East regular season champion Stony Brook, falling 5-2 in the second America East Tournament elimination game on the campus of Binghamton University.

UMBC (25-31) got on the board in the first when Bridget O'Malley (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) worked a full count walk and was followed by an infield single by Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) to put to on with none out. Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) then smoked a grounder that the Stony Brook (26-23-2) third baseman misplayed allowing O'Malley to score from second and put the Retrievers up 1-0. The Retrievers would load the bases with one out, but Danielle O'Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern) rocket line drive was snagged by a leaping SBU shortstop and a pop up then ended the threat.

The Seawolves rallied and took a 2-1 lead in the third when two errors allowed two runs, one unearned to score, but the Retrievers would answer in the fourth. Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa/Franklin Regional) doubled off the wall in left to start the inning, and Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) singled to left to put runners on the corners with one out. Senior Jordan Sganga (Edgewater, Md./South River) brought in Jackson with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at two. Stony Brook, however, answered that run with one of their own in the fifth off a two-out solo homer to re-take the lead.

Starting pitcher Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) exited with two on and one out in the sixth, but Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) was able to get Stony Brook to line into a double play to short to end the threat. Puccio, fell to 8-5, went 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, three runs, two earned, while striking out two and walking none. After the Retrievers went quietly in the sixth, the Seawolves lined a two-out double down the line in left and followed it up with a homer to push the lead to 5-2 in the seventh. In relief. Holte went 1.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on two hits with no strikeouts or walks.

O'Malley moved into sole possession of ninth place in career runs scored with 119, when she scored in the first inning. The senior shortstop also finished her distinguished career in the top ten in several statistical categories, including first in career walks (109), eighth in both games played (210) and started (210).
