West Hartford, Conn. -- Freshman Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) hit a tie-breaking, two-out single in the seventh inning to complete a final inning rally in game one as the UMBC Softball team split an America East doubleheader at Hartford on Saturday afternoon.

Peyou's heroics earned the Retrievers a 3-2 come-from-behind win in game one, before Hartford shutout UMBC, 4-0, in game two despite two doubles from Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional)

Game 1

Sophomore Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) returned from a two game absence, and led-off the game with a single, the 100^th of her career. She would move to second on an error, then third on sacrifice bunt from Peyou, and then scored on a wild pitch. Hartford (5-30, 1-6) would eventually tie the game up at one in the fourth inning, and then take a 2-1 lead in the sixth. UMBC (18-25, 2-8), however, would rally after sophomore Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J/New Milford) started off the seventh by reaching on an error. Freshman Shayna Rider (Westminster, Md./Delone Catholic) pinch ran and would immediately score when Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) followed with a double to tie the game at two. After a few fielder's choices, Peyou stepped up to the plate with Chelsie Delperuto (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) on second and Alexander on first. She then slapped a ball through the left side to score Delperuto and give the Retrievers a 3-2 lead. Pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) would close the door on the Hawks in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.

Holte went all seven innings, allowing ten hits, two runs and striking out two in the win. The junior southpaw also did not walk a batter as she improved to 9-10 on the season.

Game 2

The second game was scoreless until Hartford exploded for four runs on in the bottom of the fourth. The Hawks started off the inning with four consecutive doubles to knock Lane out of the game. Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) entered in the circle and limited the damage as she went the final three inning only allowing one batter to reach base, via error. Jackson was the only Retriever with a multi-hit game, smashing two doubles to continue her torrid offensive pace of the past few weeks. Lane took the loss, falling to 3-6, as she lasted only three-plus innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out two.
