Softball Welcomes Coppin State and Howard for Mid-Week Contests

Baltimore, Md.--  Fresh off a Sunday split with Fairleigh Dickinson, the UMBC Softball team (5-11) will welcome local rivals Coppin State and Howard to UMBC Softball Stadium for three mid-week games. The Retrievers and Coppin State will face-off in a single game on Tuesday at 2 p.m., while Howard will drive up to Baltimore for a Wednesday double-header beginning at 1 p.m.

UMBC is led offensively by freshman left fielder Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), who has team bests in average (.442), on-base percentage (.489) and stolen bases (six). Sophomore first baseman Carly Lesko  continues to be the pwer of the Dawgs lineup, with a team-leading five home runs and 18 RBI. Junior third baseman Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) is batting .349 on the season and hit two home runs on Sunday against the Knights. She know has blasted four homers on the year to go with her 15 RBI and team-best .744 slugging percentage.

Scouting the Eagles (0-4)

Coppin State has not played a game in over 20 days as their weekend home openers on March 5th & 6th was canceled due to wet field conditions. On Sunday, February 14th, the Eagles dropped their last game of the Aggie Invitational to host North Carolina A&T, 10-3.

Senior Danielle Smith and freshman Megan Narvaez, who has an impressive .571 average to go along with three RBI, lead the Eagles offense. Smith has scored three runs, stolen three bases and has an on-base percentage of .563. The pitching staff is paced by Melanie Benge, who has recorded ten strikeouts and has an ERA of 8.40 in four appearances (three starts) 

Scouting the Bison (0-10)

Howard is coming off a tough weekend, dropping five games at the Mason Patriot Classic at George Mason. The Bison fell to the hosts, 5-2 on Friday before dropping 7-0 and 11-1 decisions to Army West Point and Marist on Saturday. On Sunday, Howard once again fell to Marist and Mason.
