Softball Welcomes Coppin State and Brown for Midweek Double-Headers

Baltimore, Md. – Fresh off opening America East play this past weekend, the UMBC Softball team will step out of conference to host Coppin State and Brown for a pair of midweek double-headers.

UMBC (13-16, 1-2) will enter the matchup with Coppin State having played only three games in the last 11 days.  The Retrievers dropped two of three to Stony Brook at UMBC Softball Stadium last weekend to open up America East play.  However, UMBC's 6-3 win in the series-opener ended a 13-game losing streak to Stony Brook that dated back to 2011.

Bridget O'Malley (Baltimore, Md/Seton Keough) leads the Retrievers in average (.450), on-base percentage (.520), hits (36) and walks (14). Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va/Atlee) heads the pitching staff with a 7-6 record to go with a 4.43 ERA in 72.2 innings pitched.

Scouting the Eagles (2-16)
Coppin State comes in after taking two of three (3-2, 2-7, 4-1) from MEAC rival UMES at home. Danielle Smith leads the Eagles in almost every major category as she is batting .482 with 27 hits, 14 runs scored and 39 total bases. She also leads the team in slugging percentage (.696), on-base percentage (.545), stolen bases (eight), doubles (eight) and triples (two). The rotation is lead by Megan Narvaez, who is 2-2 with a 7.36 ERA.

Scouting the Bears (8-7)

Brown is spending a few days in the Baltimore area, as their double-header at Morgan State on Monday was cancelled, but they have a DH at Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday before the twin bill at UMBC.  Julia Schoenewald has appeared in all 15 games (starting 14) paces the Bears offense, hitting a torrid .500, with a .889 slugging percentage and .581 on-base percentage. Katie Orona is the top pitcher for Brown, coming to town with a 4-3 record and 3.47 ERA in a team-high 44.1 innings.
