Peyou Named America East Rookie of the Week; DH at Hampton Set for Wednesday

Virginia Beach, Va.— The UMBC Softball doubleheader at Norfolk State scheduled for this afternoon has been postponed due to field conditions at NSU Softball Field. The contests will be made up at UMBC on Wednesday, April 27 at 2:15 pm and 4:30 pm. The scheduled single game at Hampton tomorrow, March 16th, will now be a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm.

Freshman Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) was named America East Rookie of the week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. The slap-hitting left fielder batted .500 in six games last week, driving in four runs and scoring six of her own.

Peyou is hitting .458 on the season and bats second for UMBC (10-13), which boasts a powerful top of the order. Sophomore center fielder Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) is batting .364 out of the leadoff spot, and leads the team in runs (26), hits (28), doubles (six) and stolen bases (seven). Senior shortstop Bridget O'Malley (Baltimore, Md./ Seton Keough) follows Peyou in the order and is batting .406  with 14 RBI and a team-high ten walks. Sophomore first baseman Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) and junior third baseman Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) have combined for 12 of the Retrievers' 18 home runs (Lesko with eight) and 47 RBI.

Sophomore Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) paces the pitching staff, with a 4-2 record (3-0 last week) and a 4.03 ERA and a team-best 34 strikeouts.

UMBC returns home to host the UMBC Spring Classic, beginning on Friday with a game against Siena at 12:45.
