Women's Basketball Defeated By #5 Maryland, 92-42

Box Score

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) led the UMBC women's basketball team with a team-high 13 points, but the #5 Maryland Terrapins defeated the Retrievers, 92-42, in the first meeting of the teams since 2011.

Castaldo was the only Retriever to finish with double-digit points as freshman Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va./Norfolk Academy) chipped in nine to go along with three assists and two steals. Junior Lakiah Sims (Riverdale, Ga./Charles Drew/Palm Beach State) led UMBC with eight rebounds. Maryland's Kristen Confroy led all scorers with 17 points and four assists, while Brionna Jones chipped in 11. Kiah Gillespie brought down a game-high 13 boards.

Maryland scored the first four points of the game before Moore knocked down the first bucket for UMBC. The Terps would use a 12-2 run to take a 16-4 lead before Castaldo took to the charity stripe to knock in two free throws. The first quarter ended with a three-point basket from freshman Allison McGrath (South Park, Pa./South Park) but Maryland kept a commanding 24-9 lead.

The Terps opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run before Castaldo knocked down a trey. Six of the junior's 13 points came in the second period, going 2-of-5 from the field. The Retrievers held the Terps to just 11 points in the second stanza as the hosts took a 42-17 lead into the half.

Senior Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) drained the first basket of the third quarter for the Retrievers, but three straight treys helped to kick start a 19-5 run for the Terps and helped to extend their lead to 37 at one point.

UMBC went toe-to-toe with Maryland in the final period of the game, opening the quarter with a 13-12 score balance, thanks to baskets from Wilson and Sims. However, Maryland used the final two and a half minutes to go on an 8-3 run to close out the 92-42 victory.

Up Next: UMBC will return to the RAC Arena as they welcome Morgan State on Wednesday, Dec. 7 with a 7 p.m. tip-off. Fans who cannot make it to the game will be able to view the game on ESPN3.
