Women's Basketball Falls to Maryland Eastern Shore, 70-57, on Saturday

BALTIMORE, Md. – After a close battle through three quarters of play, the UMBC women's basketball team fell to the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks, 70-57, for its first loss of the season. The Hawks improves to 2-1 overall on the season while the Retrievers fall to 2-1 overall.

Senior Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) led the Retrievers with 17 points and seven boards, while junior Lakiah Sims (Riverdale, Ga./Charles Drew/Palm Beach State) recorded her second double-digit performance with 10 points. Freshman Lucrezia Costa (Rome, Italy/Liceo Classico Enrico Perito) grabbed a career-high seven rebounds as well. The Hawks' Ciani Byrom registered a game-high 19 points and added six boards, while Tori Morris added 10 points.

MDES opened up the first quarter on a 7-0 run before Wilson downed a layup for the UMBC's first points of the game. UMBC would go on a 6-2 run to close out the first quarter, including a a three-pointer from Tyler Moore (Portsmouth, Va./Norfolk Academy), but MDES would hold onto a 12-11 lead.

The Hawks and Retrievers kept things close in second quarter, with UMBC tying things up with a little over two minutes remaining after Costa took to the free throw line. MDES took a 31-26 lead after a three-point shot and layup before a jumper from senior Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) closed the gap to 31-28 at the half.

UMBC hit 58.3 percent of its shots in the third quarter, but could not overcome the Hawks' 66.7 percent three-point shooting as MDES extended their lead to as much as nine at one point. Wilson closed out the period with a trey, but couldn't catch the Hawks' 55-49 lead.

MDES outscored UMBC, 15-8 in the final quarter, with 10 of the Hawks' 22 points in the paint coming in the period.

UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC will remain home as they host Towson on Tuesday, Nov. 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
