Women's Soccer Notches First Conference Win over Maine, 3-0

Box Score

Video Highlights

BALTIMORE, Md. – Three second-half goals propelled the UMBC women's soccer team past the Maine Black Bears, 3-0 on Sunday, Oct. 2 for their first America East win of the season. The Retrievers move to 5-7-0 (1-2-0 America East), while the Black Bears fall to 6-4-0 (2-1-0 America East).

"[Getting that first conference win] is like taking a breath," head coach Leslie Wray. "We were really nervous because Maine has some really talented players in the midfield and they play a different system than we do that we haven't matched up well against before."

The first half of the game was silent for both teams, but UMBC struck first in the 54th minute of the game after redshirt-senior Alexa Quaranta crossed a ball high into the box and sophomore Wren Aye headed in her first score of the year.

At the 70-minute mark, the Retrievers would take a 2-0 lead after senior Preslie Quaranta sent a ball into the box, which Alexa Quaranta attempted to head. The ball landed at the feet of junior Angela Kuhn, who sent the ball into the net.

Preslie Quaranta would make the score 3-0 in the 79th minute, after she attempted to cross the ball into the box and it took a lucky hook into the left corner of the net behind the goalkeeper.

With the win, the Retrievers remained undefeated at Retriever Soccer Park, which head coach Leslie Wray said is in part to the surface the team plays on.

"Playing on a grass field helps, but it's always nice to come back and protect our home field and feel comfortable," said Wray. "Plus, we have some confidence at home now."

Overall, the Black Bears out-shot the Retrievers, 16-7, with a 6-4 advantage on goal. Sophomore Leah Roth moved to 5-7-0 on the season after making four saves and collected her second shutout of the season. Maine's Samantha Cobotic fell to 2-1-0 after allowing three goals and making one save.

UP NEXT FOR THE RETIREVERS: UMBC will remain at Retriever Soccer Park as they welcome UMass Lowell on Thursday, Oct. 6 to kick off the 2016 Homecoming festivities. The match is set begin at 7 p.m.
