Quaranta Guides UMBC Women's Soccer to 1-0 Victory at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – UMBC women's soccer's red-shirt junior forward Alexa Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) registered a game-high six shots, with one reaching the back of the net for the lone goal in a 1-0 victory against Delaware State in non-conference action on Friday night at Alumni Field.

The Retrievers snapped a four-game skid with their first shutout of the season to improve to 2-6-1 on the season. The Hornets fall to 0-6-0 all-time against the Retrievers and drop to 2-6-1 on the year.

Quaranta registered her first score of the season 11:47 into the contest to give the Retrievers a 1-0 advantage. The goal, which snapped a two-game scoreless streak for UMBC, came after Quaranta gathered a rebound from an Amanda Dailey (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) shot.

UMBC nearly added to its advantage with 15 seconds remaining in the first period as freshman midfielder Skyler Mackey (Washington, D.C./Woodrow Wilson) drilled a shot off the post. The Retrievers finished the opening half with four corners and five shots, with three attempts coming from Quaranta.

The Dawgs didn't take their foot of the gas in the second half, recording four shots in the opening 20 minutes of the second stanza.

The Hornets had their best opportunity of the night in the 66th minute as senior back Morgan Durham had a penalty kick sail wide of the net. DSU finished the contest with 15 shots, including 12 in the second period.

UMBC senior goalkeeper Jen Nance (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) returned to the starting lineup after a two-game hiatus and finished the night with four stops. The shutout was the 10th of her career, tying her for fifth all-time at UMBC. DSU goalkeeper Michele Lammers finished the night with three saves. 

UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC returns home for back-to-back contests at Retriever Soccer Park, starting with a matchup on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. against George Washington.
