Morgen Leads the Charge as UMBC Defeats Morgan State, 3-1 on Friday

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC freshman Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton East) led the way with 15 kills and seven digs as the Retriever volleyball squad defeated Morgan State, 3-1, in their first contest of the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament.

The Retrievers (4-4) started out strong by going on a 5-0 run to make it 6-1 early in the the first set. Morgan State (1-8) answered back late in the first set by virtue of an attacking error by UMBC, starting the Lady Bears on a 3-0 run and forcing the hosts to take a timeout.  UMBC ended the game by taking four  of the last five  points of the game and triumphed, 25-20.

In the second set, UMBC would take control early by going on a 4-0 run. MSU struck back after a service error from UMBC.  Both teams would go back and forth until a kill from senior Krystal Williams (Baltimore, Md/ Western Tech) ignited a UMBC 8-2 run. The Retrievers cruised to a 25-14 victory to take a 2-0 lead.
MSU would take control of the third set early by building a 10-5 lead. UMBC freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./ Olathe Northwest) produced a pair of back-to-back kills to bring the Retrievers within 10-7. Morgan would then come back and to go on a 4-0 and force a UMBC timeout. The visitors went on a 7-4 run and captured the set, 25-20.

Both teams tried to spark something early in the fourth game, as Morgan State took an early 7-4 lead, but the Retrievers bounced back and took control late in the set to prevail, 25-22.

Schneider finished the match with 12 kills and 4 digs and Williams added 10 kills.

The Retrievers return to action later this evening at 7 p.m. for a match-up against Fordham in the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament at RAC Arena.
