UMBC Softball Drops Doubleheader at Stony Brook

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – UMBC softball struggled to get production from its bats in Friday afternoon's America East doubleheader at University Field. Stony Brook tallied a pair of victories against the Retrievers on the day with a 4-0 win in game one and a 9-0 five-inning win in game two.

The Retrievers loaded the bases in the final inning of each game, but the Dawgs were unable to take advantage. UMBC junior Danielle O'Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern) registered two of the Retrievers' six hits on the day.

GAME 1: Stony Brook 4, UMBC 0

SBU loaded the bases in the bottom of the first on a walk and a pair of singles, but UMBC starting pitcher Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) escaped the threat undamaged by forcing a pair of groundouts to end the inning.

The Retrievers had their first base runner of the contest on a walk from senior Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) looked to follow with UMBC's first hit of the day, but SBU senior Bria Green made a tough catch in right to rob Jackson on a ball hit to the fence.

Stony Brook broke a scoreless affair in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting the lead-off batter on base with a double to right center. A fly out to right field from Green advanced freshman Chelsea Evans to third with one out. Senior Shayla Giosia picked up the RBI on a squeeze bunt to put the Seawolves out in front, 1-0.

The Seawolves added to their advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo homer to right field from junior Melissa Phelan. Sophomore Lexie Shue followed with a triple to right field and junior Alexandra Pisciotta drove her in on a double to right center to make it a 3-0 ballgame. UMBC's Nicole Casagrand (Horsha, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) came in to pitch for the Retrievers, but Evans picked up her second hit of the game and a Retriever error on the play extended the lead to 4-0. Lane (1-2) finished her day surrendering four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.

O'Neill broke up the no-hitter on a shot to the fence in center field with one out in the top of the seventh to put runners on first and second. A single up the middle from junior Bridget O'Malley (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) loaded the bases for the Retrievers. An infield fly brought UMBC to its final out and a pinch-hit ground out ended the contest.

SBU starter Allison Cukrov (11-4) picked up the complete game shutout, surrendering two hits and striking out four batters to help the Seawolves capture the America East regular-season title.

GAME 2: Stony Brook 9, UMBC 0 (5 innings)

Stony Brook took a two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homer to center field from Giosia, her 11th home run of the season.

The Seawolves added five runs in the bottom of the second inning, including a three-run homer from Phelan, to take a 7-0 lead after two frames. UMBC starting pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) ended her day after 1.2 innings of work, allowing seven runs on eight hits.

The Retrievers' rookie pitcher Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) came in relief, but Stony Brook added two more runs in the third with Phelan and Shue each picking up an RBI in the inning.

UMBC loaded the bases with three singles in the top of the fifth, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

SBU starter Jane Sallen (15-9) earned the complete game shutout victory, surrendering four hits in the game. Puccio allowed two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief work for the Retrievers.

UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC concludes its regular-season with the series finale against Stony Brook on Saturday, May 2 at noon.
