Weather Forces UMBC Softball into Further Schedule Changes

BALTIMORE – The UMBC softball team has cancelled its doubleheader against North Carolina Central that was scheduled for Sunday, March 1, due to expected weather in the Durham, N.C. area. The Retrievers have also postponed their Tuesday, March 3 matchup against Morgan State due to field conditions at the UMBC Softball Stadium.

UMBC is set to get in four games on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Sunday, March 1 in Savannah, Ga., at the Allen Paulsen Sports Complex. The Retrievers will play against Morehead State on Saturday at 12 p.m. and follow with an East Tennessee State matchup at 4 p.m.., while Sunday is set for a 10 a.m. doubleheader versus Morehead State and East Tenessee State, respectively.

Scouting the Retrievers (0-8): UMBC hasn't played since dropping four contests at the UNC Wilmington Landfall Park Hampton Inn & Suites Invitational. Senior Taylor Hall is batting a team-best .333 with a .500 on-base percentage. Sophomore Kaelin Jackson has blasted a pair of home runs for three runs batted in. In the circle, sophomore Jessica Holte has tossed four complete games and has struck out 19 batters.

Scouting the Eagles (3-7): Morehead State dropped three of four at the Jackson State Tournament last weekend. Karly Thompson is batting a team-best .400 and has driven in six runs on the year. Mackenzie Grossmann has made four starts and eight appearances in the circle for the Eagles, posting a 1-2 record and a 3.68 ERA. 

Scouting the Buccaneers (5-5): The Bucs won three of four at East Carolina two weeks ago. Kelsey Smith is batting .400 for the Bucs in eight appearances and has recorded four home runs for nine runs batted in. East Tennessee State has used five pitchers in the circle, led by a 1.56 ERA from Taylor Carter.

The Retrievers have rescheduled a doubleheader against Morgan State for Wednesday, April 8. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the UMBC Softball Stadium.

The Retrievers have also condensed the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational into a two-day tournament, with games scheduled for Saturday, March 6 and Sunday, March 7.
