Loubatie, Svard Win Three-Setters to Lead Men's Tennis Over W&M, 4-3

Williamsburg, Va. – After a difficult 4-3 loss at William & Mary in 2014, the UMBC men's tennis team exacted a measure of revenge against the regionally-ranked Tribe, winning four of six singles matches and defeating the hosts, 4-3 at McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

It was UMBC's first-ever victory over William & Mary, after three previous setbacks since the series started in 2010.

The Retrievers have won three straight, all over Colonial Athletic Association squads and stand at 4-2 on the season, while W&M dropped to 10-7.

The Tribe took the No. 2 doubles match, but the Nos. 3 and 1 contests were extremely close. At No. 1, senior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and junior Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) led their counterparts, 5-4, but the Retrievers' No. 3 duo of junior Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and senior Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) dropped a narrow 6-4 decision to fall behind the Tribe, 1-0.

William & Mary won at No. 4 singles to take a brief 2-0 lead, but Carter got UMBC on the board at the No. 2 flight with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Will Juggins.  The Retrievers knotted the match when junior Jaan Kononov (Talinn, Estonia) knocked off the Tribe's No. 1 player, Christian Cargill, 7-5, 6-4.

The Tribe retook the lead with a straight set win at No. 6 singles, but the Nos. 5 and 3 matches both went the distance and both favored the Retrievers. At No. 5, Loubatie dropped the first set to Scott Huang, but came roaring back for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory to square the match at 3-all.

Junior Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) dropped a tough first set tie-breaker to Addison Appleby, but like Loubatie, came on strong to capture sets two and three, 6-0, 6-2, to clinch the match for the visitors.

The Tribe leads the all-times series with the Retrievers at 3-0 and all three wins have come in Williamsburg. After posting 6-1 wins over UMBC in 2010 and 2012, W&M survived the Retrievers, 4-3, last season.

UMBC heads to Blacksburg, Va. to take on Virginia Tech on Feb. 28.
