Farmville, Va.—UMBC men's basketball picked up a big 70-59 win at Longwood on Saturday to move to 2-7 on the year. Redshirt sophomore Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) paced the offense with 18 points, going 6-8 from the foul line.
The opening half saw the Retrievers take a quick 5-0 lead, with all five scored by junior Will Darley (Timonium, Md./Dulaney/Fishburne Academy). The Lancers responded with a trio of threes from Kanayo Obi-Rapu. From there, the Lancers would score 13 straight to push ahead 17-7 midway through.
However UMBC would respond, outscoring the Lancers 22-6 over the final seven minutes of the half. Elliott gave the Retrievers the lead on an emphatic one-handed dunk at 29-28.
Darley led all scorers with 14 points at the break. Darley was 5-8 from the field, including 4-6 from three. Senior post Cody Joyce (Churchton, Md./Southern) added eight for the Retrievers who shot 57% from the field.
UMBC opened the second half by extending their lead to 50-38 early on. Rookie Joe Sherburne (Whitefish Bay, Wisc./Whitefish Bay) found his range, scoring nine of his 15 points in the half.
The Lancers would keep it close. Lotanna Nwogbo had a pair of buckets to keep the Retriever lead at ten points. However the Retrievers would not let the lead slip, hitting free throws down the stretch to win 70-59.
Joyce ended with 16 points, adding six rebounds. Elliott led the way, scoring 18 points, including 6-8 from the charity stripe. Darley (14 points) and Sherburne (15) also hit double figures as UMBC shot 52% from the field in the contest.
UMBC will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at Duquesne. The Retrievers and Dukes tip at 7:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh.
