BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball forced American into 25 turnovers and scored 21 points off of turnovers en route to picking up the Retrievers third victory in the last four games. Senior guard Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) and junior forward Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) each tallied 12 points on the night to help the Retrievers defeat American, 47-46, in non-conference action on Wednesday at the RAC Arena.
The Retrievers once again had a tough second quarter and found themselves in a 31-23 hole at the break. UMBC used a 14-2 run that started with 3:30 to go in the third quarter and continued into the fourth to help the Retrievers to a 47-42 lead with 2:39 to go in the contest. Back-to-back buckets from the Eagles and a UMBC turnover gave American the ball and a one-point deficit, 47-46, with 17.6 seconds remaining, but a jumper from AU's Kaitlyn Lewis as time expired did not fall.
Wilson chipped in six rebounds, while Garner added four steals in the victory. Lauren Crisler paced the Eagles with 13 points and eight rebounds. The Retrievers improve to 3-3 on the season, while American drops its seventh in a row.
The Retrievers hit three of their first four treys and forced American into six turnovers to help take a 17-6 advantage with 2:09 to go in the opening quarter. UMBC finished the opening 10 minutes of play with a 17-10 lead, with 10 of their 17 points coming off of American's seven turnovers. Sophomore guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South), who finished with seven points, drilled two of the team's three shots from long range for six points in the first period.
UMBC slowed down in the second quarter as American scored 10 of the first 12 points of the period to take their first lead of the contest, 21-19, with 4:50 to go before the break. The Retrievers' shooting struggles continued throughout the second quarter, with UMBC knocking down just two of their 11 attempts, allowing American to extend its lead to as many as nine in the quarter. The Eagles shot 50 percent in the second quarter and limited themselves to one turnover to outscore the Retrievers, 20-6, and take the 31-23 lead into the break. Garner scored five of the Retrievers' six points in the stanza and finished with a team-best eight points in the opening half.
Pandora Wilson helped the Retrievers to a push down the stretch of the third quarter, scoring the final four points of the period to help UMBC pull within three, 40-37. Wilson finished the quarter with eight of her 12 points.
The Retrievers drained back-to-back buckets to start the fourth and regained the lead, 41-40, following a Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) layup. AU's Michelle Holmes gave the Eagles back the lead on her first bucket of the game, but the Retrievers responded with a 6-0 run to jump out in front, 47-42, with 2:29 to go in the contest.
Both teams shot 25 percent in the fourth quarter, but the Retrievers forced American into nine turnovers in the deciding period.
