Morgen Leads with Seven Kills; Retrievers Fall 3-0 to Albany on Sunday

Albany, N.Y.—UMBC volleyball dropped their second straight match, 3-0 on Sunday to the Great Danes. Freshman Makenzie Morgen (Appleton, Wisc./Appleton East) led the team with seven kills and nine digs. The loss drops the Retrievers to 11-13, 5-5 AE on the year.

The Great Danes (15-8, 10-1 AE) moved into sole possession of first ahead of New Hampshire by a half game. Albany came out swinging in the first set, scoring 12 of the first 16 points to take an early 12-4 lead. The Retrievers could not overcome the deficit, falling 25-13 in the opening set.

UMBC took an early lead in the second, capitalizing on an attack error and ace by freshman Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez). The lead however would be short-lived as Albany went on a 9-2 run to take the lead for good. The Retrievers would cut the deficit to one a trio of times, but the Great Danes held on the win a close 25-22 set two.

The Retrievers used a 6-2 opening set run, fueled by a pair of kills by sophomore Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) and an ace by classmate Marissa Duncan (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron). Albany, however found the answer, as they did most of the match. They used a 4-0 run to take the lead for good. The Great Danes closed out the set, 25-17, and the match 3-0.

Morgen laid down seven kills and nine digs for the Retrievers. Mirabella, Duncan and freshman Liz Pronove (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) registered four kills each. Rookie Kristin Watson (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) had a team best 13 digs.

The Retrievers return to Baltimore for their final two matches of the regular season. The Dawgs host Hartford on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. before facing New Hampshire on Senior Day on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
