Retrievers Drop 3-0 Decision to New Hampshire on Senior Day

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC volleyball saw their regular season come to a close with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-21) loss to New Hampshire on Sunday. The Retrievers were led by senior Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock)  who had 13 kills, hitting .450 for the day. The loss drops the Retrievers to 12-14, 6-6 AE on the year.

Walker laid down 13 kills on 20 attempts for her fifth double digit performance of the year. Freshman Maddie Schneider (Olathe, Kan./Olathe Northwest) registered 12 kills adding three digs and one ace in the match. Classmate Krytsia Negron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Adianez) led the Retrievers with 23 assists.

The Wildcats (19-8, 11-1 AE) shot out to a fast 7-2 lead, never trailing in the set. The Retrievers would cut the deficit to four at 12-8 after a Schneider kill. UNH however would respond going on a 6-2 run late to take the opening set, 25-15.

Set two started the same way as the first, with the Wildcats scoring the first three points. UMBC would take the lead after rattling off five in a row spearheaded by a pair of Schneider kills and one by Walker. The set would remain close throughout, before New Hampshire put together another run, 8-2, to take the set 25-17 taking a 2-0 lead into the break.

The final stanza saw neither side give an inch early, as play went back and forth. The Wildcats would once again put together a run midway through to take the lead for good. UNH strung together six straight points, forcing Coach Blanchard to use a timeout. The Retrievers would try to cut into the deficit, but UNH held off the rally to win 25-21.

Demi Muses and Tori Forrest led the Wildcat offense with ten kills each.
