Escobedo, Retrievers Have Strong Showing at Virginia Tech Tri-Meet

Blacksburg, Va.—UMBC swimming and diving took to the pool against Virginia Tech and Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Junior Emily Escobedo had a pair of first place finishes to lead the women, while rookie Alexander Gliese had a couple of second place finishes to lead the men.

The host Hokies defeated both the men (174-126) and the women (171-129), while UMBC scored victories over Gardner-Webb. The men won 172-128 and the women won 170-130. 

On the women's side, Escobedo once again dominated to pool in the breaststroke discipline. The New York native won both the 100 and 200 breast with times of 1:02.91 and 2:14.63 respectively. Escobedo finished the day with a win in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:04.33.

Hania Moro earned a trio of top three finishes, placing second in the 200 free, 100 free and 500 free. Moro touched in at 1:51.66 in the 200, 52.93 in the 100, and 5:03.93 in the 500 free. Kristie Langford placed second in the 50 free, finishing with a time of 24.46, just .40 seconds behind the winner.

On the boards, senior Coco Darelius placed third in both the 1 meter (243.00) and 3 meter (265.20) dives.

For the men, the quartet of Mile Ruttan, Leo Endres, Philip Adejumo and Gregor Spoerlein took second in the 200 medley relay. The foursome touched the wall in a time of 1:33.28.

Individually, Alexander Gliese had a pair of second place finishes. Gliese finished the 100 back in a time of 50.39 and the  200 back in 1:50.17, just .10 seconds off the winner.

Other second place finishers include Ahmed Wahby (200 free, 1:41.82), Leo Endres (100 breast, 57.87), Gregor Spoerlein (100 free, 46.34), and Philip Adejumo (100 fly, 50.19).

The Retrievers are back in the pool on Saturday, Nov. 7 against Penn. The Retrievers and Quakers will meet at 2:00 p.m. at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.
