Box Score

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The sixth-seeded UMBC women's soccer team was unable to overcome a one-goal first half deficit, falling to third-seeded Vermont, 1-0, in the America East Quarterfinals on Thursday night at Virtue Field.

The Retrievers conclude their season with a 5-11-3 record, while the Catamounts (8-7-2) moves to the semifinals to take on Albany on Sunday, Nov. 1.

UMBC senior goalkeeper Jen Nance (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) finished the night with six saves on Vermont's 16 shots. The Retrievers' offense was unable to get going, recording just two shots and not forcing Vermont's goalkeeper Ally Ramos to have to make a save.

Vermont was the aggressor in the opening half, registering six shots before taking a 1-0 lead on a long distance shot from junior forward Dana Buckhorn that curved out of the reach of Nance into the upper left corner of the net in the 37th minute.

The Catamounts finished the opening half with eight shots to the Retrievers' one.

UVM's junior midfielder Caitie Green nearly extended the lead to two goals just minutes into the second half, but her shot soared just high of the net.

The Retrievers struggled to get their offense going, tallying just two shots on the night, but the second attempt nearly represented the equalizer, as junior forward Preslie Quaranta (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) got a shot off in traffic that rolled just wide of the net and just out of reach of a pair of Retrievers for the tip in with 1:33 to go in the contest.
