Adantor Sets New School Record, UMBC Finishes at Penn State Open and Patriot Games

The UMBC track and field teams finished up their impressive weekends, by taking it to the field at both the Penn State Open and Patriot Games on Saturday. The Retrievers were paced by Yao Adantor, who set another school record. 

The men were led by Adantor at Penn State, who tossed yet another school record in the shot put. Yao landed a career and school best throw of 17.16m, breaking the previous best of 16.98m. 

Nick Johnson led the charge on the track, placing fifth in the 1000 with a time of 2:29.88.

Essence Fredericks paced the women at Penn State, winning the 500 in 1:15.16. Paulette Fogle took second in the 500 invite race, crossing the tape in 1:14.68. Mary Katherine Kulp, Angelina Oputa and Julie Gessler had top finishes for the Retrievers. Kulp placed sixth in the 800m (2:16.94), Oputa finished third in the 1000 (2:59.81), while Gessler took fourth in the 5k with a time of 17:44.23. Mercedes Jackson finished her strong weekend with a season best time in the 200m. Mercedes placed fifth with a time of 24.19.

At George Mason, the men were led by Darius Oxley, who place fourth in the 500m. Oxley crossed the tape in a time of 1:06.83. Other notable men's finishers were Charles Bolinger in the 1000 (fifth, 2:35.99) and Luke Kessler in the 5k (seventh, 16:02.29).

For the women, Marie Yuille led the Retrievers with a second place finish in the 500m. Marie crossed the line in a time of 1:19.30. Sophia Cologer and Chelsea Vane were other notable UMBC finishers. Cologer placed seventh in the 3000 with a time of 10:27.84, while Vane finished third in the 5k in 18:28.51.

UMBC will head back to Penn State for the Sykes & Sabock meet on Feb. 6-7.
