Dawgs and 'Cats- Men's Basketball Hosts Vermont in Saturday Matinee

Vermont at UMBC Game Notes, Jan. 17, 2015

UMBC will have played three games in six days when the Retrievers face Vermont and Hartford in short order this holiday weekend at the RAC Arena. The Catamounts are first up and the Dawgs and Cats compete on Saturday, Jan. 17 with tip-off time for the contest set for 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Q1370 and live video and stats links will be available via www.umbcretrievers.com.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: The undermanned Retrievers (2-14, 0-3 AE) continue to battle as they have led two of the three league games with five minutes to go, but have come up empty on all three occasions. Host Stony Brook outscored UMBC, 16-5, in the final 4:59 on Wednesday, reversing a stunning 22-6 Retriever surge earlier in the half, and prevailed, 64-54. Grad student guard Wayne Sparrow led all players with 17 points and continues to lead UMBC at 13.4 points per game, while freshman point guard Jourdan Grant leads the America East Conference in assists (4.4) per game and has 21 helpers in his first three AE contests. Junior post Cody Joyce (11.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg) had double-doubles in each of his first two league contests and scored 11 of his 13 points at SBU in the second half.

CATAMOUNT UPDATE:  Sophomore guard Dre Wills scored 11 points and added nine rebounds and four assists as the Vermont Catamounts pulled out a 55-52 victory over visiting Dartmouth at Patrick Gymnasium in the final non-conference game of the year for UVM on Wednesday evening.  Vermont extended its win streak to three games and improves to 8-8 overall and is 3-0 in league play. The Catamounts feature a balanced attack, led by junior Ethan O'Day at 11.3 points per game, while Wills is shooting 59 percent from the floor.

WHO'S UP NEXT:  UMBC welcomes Hartford to the RAC Arena in an MLK Day matinee (1:00 p.m.).
