Annapolis, Md. – The UMBC men's tennis team split a dozen matches with the host Midshipmen in the Navy National Fall Invitational. The squads each won two doubles and four singles matches during competition on September 27.
Senior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and junior Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) continued their outstanding doubles play with an 8-7 triumph over Calvin Mark/Aries Wong at the No. 1 position.
A pair of underclassmen, sophomore Biyik Akinshemoyin (Laurel, Md./Resevoir) and freshman Jeremy Gibbens (Ontario, Canada) defeated Tyler Burnett/Andrey Majkic, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles.
Drean finished the weekend undefeated as he edged Mark, 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 singles flight. The Retrievers took the No. 2 flight as junior Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) overwhelmed Wong, 6-3. 6-1.
Senior Kamal Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) and Akinshemoyin were the other UMBC vicros on the day. Patel rallied to edge Alex Gaines, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 flight, while Akinshemoyin completed his sweep of the day with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Krishna Jana.
