Schmidt's Ten Kills Paces UMBC in 3-0 Loss Against Coppin State

Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC volleyball team (4-5) dropped their fifth match in a row, losing 3-0 to Coppin State on the final day of the Maddie Bingaman Memorial Tournament. Senior Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) paced the Retrievers with ten kills.

Coppin State pushed the Retrievers from the opening serve. Neither team could distance themselves from the other, as the two sides went back and forth. Every time the Eagles got out ahead, UMBC found an answer. Coppin State would string together a pair of points to take set one, 25-23.

UMBC found themselves down 8-4 early in the second stanza. A pair of Schmidt kills cut the deficit to just three, but the Eagles had an answer for the Retriever run in Cindy Okpegbue. Okpegbue had five of her game-high 14 kills in the second set. UMBC would again trim the Eagle lead to just three after an Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) service ace made it 14-11. Coppin State would hold on to win the set 25-20, taking a 2-0 lead.

The Retrievers came out swinging in the third set. UMBC took an early 2-0 lead after a Mirabella kill and an error by the Eagles. Much, like the first set, the third set went back and forth. Each team took the lead, before giving it right back. Coppin State would take a 20-18 lead, following a pair of Retrievers attack errors forcing a Retriever timeout. The Eagles held on to take the final set 25-21 and the match 3-0.

Hannah Schmidt paced UMBC with ten kills, adding seven digs and one block. Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Krystal Mlemchukwu (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) had seven kills each, with Mlemchukwu adding three blocks. Paige Miller (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) registering 30 assists.

The Retrievers return to action at the Wildcat Classic, September 19-20 in Tucson, Arizona. UMBC will face Tulane (3:30 p.m.) and Coppin State (7:30 p.m.) on Friday, before squaring off with #21 Arizona on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
