Softball Homers Four Times But Falls to Georgetown, 8-6

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC softball blasted four home runs in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference matchup against Georgetown, but the Retrievers finished the contest with five total hits, falling to the Hoyas, 8-6, at the UMBC Softball Stadium.

Junior first baseman Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) finished with two of the Retrievers' four home runs to move into sixth on UMBC's all-time home run list (25), surpassing Taryn McDonald (1996-99), in addition to tallying her 100th-career RBI. She also moved into a tie for ninth on UMBC's career extra-base hits list (59).

GU improves to 18-15 on the season, while the Retrievers (22-15) fall for the fourth straight game for the first time this season.

Georgetown drove in a trio of runs in the top of the second inning, leading off the frame with a walk, followed by four straight singles. A double play and strikeout helped starting pitcher Nicole Casagrand (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) get out of the inning.

The Retrievers got one back in the bottom half of the frame, as sophomore designated player Danielle O'Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern) crushed her third home run in the last three games, this one hitting the scoreboard in center field to bring UMBC back within two, 3-1.

A solo home run down the left field line from designated player Megan Hyson extended the Hoyas advantage to 4-1 in the third.

Hall blasted a solo shot over the fence on the left field line in the bottom of the third, marking UMBC's second hit of the contest. The Retrievers were not done in the inning, as a triple down the left field line from freshman third baseman Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) allowed pinch runner Jordan Sganga (Edgewater, Md./South River) to come around and score to trim the deficit to one, 4-3.

UMBC freshman pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) came in to finish the contest for the Retrievers, ending Casagrand's day in the circle after allowing four earned runs on eight hits in four innings. The Hoyas loaded the bases with no outs against Holte. Despite getting back-to-back batters to pop out in the infield, a single up the middle from third baseman Taylor Henry scored a pair of runs for Georgetown. An errant throw on the ensuing batter allowed the Hoyas to add one more in the frame, extending the advantage to four, 7-3.

The Retrievers added their third solo home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, this one traveling down the left field line from sophomore short stop Bridget O'Malley (Brooklyn, Md./Seton Keough). GU's starting pitcher Lauren O'Leary pitched to one more batter in the inning before Hyson took the circle. O'Leary allowed four runs on four hits in the victory (9-7).

The Hoyas added further insurance in the top of the seventh inning, scoring an unearned run from second base following an errant throw to first.

The Retrievers tried to eliminate the deficit in their final at bats with O'Malley drawing a one-out walk and Hall launching her second home run of the day, but UMBC was unable to get any closer.

Hyson picked up her first save of the season, while Casagrand was credited with the loss for the Retrievers.

O'Neill finished the day with one home run and two walks, moving into a tie for eighth on UMBC's single-season walks list (27).

The Retrievers return to action on Friday, April 11 when they open a three-game series with a single game at America East foe Maine. The series concludes on Saturday, April 12 with a doubleheader.
